Lil Nas X releases new single “J CHRIST”
Two years after releasing his debut album “Montero”, Lil Nas X celebrates his comeback with ‘J CHRIST‘ and dedicates his new single to the man who, according to him, “had the greatest comeback of all time”: Jesus Christ.
Even before the song was released, the artist had already caused quite a stir: he generated more than 20 million views with snippet clips on TikTok. The music video for the single also marks Lil Nas X’s solo directorial debut and shows him conquering both the gates of heaven and the fires of hell.
It is not the first time the 24-year-old has used religious symbols in his music. In 2021, he had already caused controversy with the music video for his single ‘Montero (Call Me By Your Name)‘ with satirical depictions of Satan and hell. The inspiration behind the music video were conservatives’ reactions to him coming out as gay.
Despite controversy, the single was a huge success: it reached number one in the UK charts, as well as in the US charts. His debut album “Montero” was certified platinum.
Lil Nas X had his breakthrough in 2019 when his genre-breaking hit ‘Old Town Road‘ feat. Billy Ray Cyrus became the longest-running number 1 single in the history of the Billboard Hot 100. The 24-year-old is now continuing his success story with ‘J CHRIST’.
