Sony Music Entertainment and architects studio karhard amongst the winners of the German Design Award 2022
The interior of Sony Music Berlin was awarded the “Special Mention” for outstanding design quality in the category “Excellent Architecture – Interior Architecture” by the German Design Council. The German Design Award is one of the most prestigious awards in the design world.
The team of studio karhard is responsible for the interior design of the 7800 sqm building, newly constructed by the architectural firm Gewers Pudewill.
studio karhard was commissioned in April 2019 to design the interiors of the new German and European headquarters of Sony Music Entertainment and Sony Music Publishing in Berlin. The new headquarters was inaugurated in September 2020 in Berlin-Schöneberg. On seven floors, not only workplaces for up to 400 employees were created, but also a creative place where employees can meet, produce, present and listen to music together with musicians and music creators. The new location combines performance, presentation and production facilities and serves as a base for creative potential.
The heart of the building is the cafeteria, equipped with a convertible bar and stage, and the music studio “Circle Studios”. Stylistically, the building is characterized by the glamour of the 80s with lots of steel, glass and glitter, e.g. in the form of stainless steel mosaics, but also colored carpets and plant islands. The design concept that studio karhard developed together with Sony Music follows the aesthetic of “glamour punk”, a dedication to the Schöneberg of the eighties, which was style-defining for Berlin’s music and club scene.
The German Design Award is the premium prize of the German Design Council. Since 2012, the German Design Award has been identifying significant design trends, presenting them to a broad public and honoring them.
